He’d been sleeping on the cold, hard floor for 3 years…
Weve all seen those homecoming videos that play one after another on YouTube and Sports Center. The ones where military dads come home to babies theyve never met, or daughters who have been away at school surprise mom and dad before Christmas. Every surprise story is full of joy and emotion, but this might be the greatest one yet.
After three years of being homeless, single mother Lamanda Brown and her four kids were given the surprise of a lifetime.
Humble Design, a Detroit-based non-profit, donated and fully furnished a home for the 29-year-old and her growing kids.
“I’m still trying to get them used to sleeping in their beds,” Brown explains. From time to time, they’re still sleeping on the floor. When I see that I want to cry, because this is what I did.”
“It’s depressing,” admitted her son, Lamond, when asked about their sleeping situation on the floor.
For the last three years, Brown and her kids, ages 2, 5, 7, and 11, have been bouncing around between the homes of relatives, and different shelters in the city.
Humble Design works with eight shelters in the Detroit area and decorate as many as three public homes a week for families that are transitioning out of shelters.
For Brown, the most special thing about moving into their new home was that her eldest son, Lamond, 11, was no longer carrying the burden of having to take care of his younger siblings.Henow spends time with the neighbor kids, and gets to do activities that he enjoys.
It makes me happy that he wants to be a kid again, instead of trying to be the big man, Brown says.
